Khuldabad Qawwals

Khuldabad is a village in the  Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, India.  Located only a few kilometers from the famous Ellora caves, Khuldabad is home to many Islamic shrines (dargahs), tombs of Muslim Saints. Qawwali (Islamic devotional music) programs are a regular feature of life at the Khuldabad dargahs. I made a number of field recordings of Qawwali performances in Khuldabad in July, 2004. Below are a few samples.

This building (above, left) is the tomb of Raju Qattal, father of the famous saint of Gulbarga, Hazrat Bandanawaz Gisudaraz. At this dargah I recorded Qawwalis sung by Salimuddin Hafiz Fakruddin Chishti Nizami Qawwal (above, right).  Click here for a sample of Salim's Qawwali, click here for a sample video.

This is the entrance to the tomb of the Khuldabad saint, Zar Zari Zar Baksh (above, left, and below, right). At this dargah I recorded Qawwalis by Torab Nizami Qawwal (above, right, playing harmonium). Click here for a sample of Torab's Qawwali, click here for a sample video.

At the end of one of the Qawwali programs, Tajmohhamed Qawwal (above, left) closed the program with a prayer. Click here for a sample of the recited prayer, click here for a sample video.
