Living the Creative Life
|
Creativity is the rational application of intuition
for the purpose
of adding value to self and other.
|
Each
of us is a creative person, whether we are consciously
aware of it or not. To live the creative life is to
consciously engage the creative process, to actively and
deliberately shape our world in ways that best serve our
highest good, and the highest good of the culture in which
we live. There are countless ways to achieve this.
Creative people give themselves permission to choose the
path that is most in sync with who they are at the deepest
level, and to create lives that generously serve
themselves and others. They express these unique paths
through their daily lives, through their work in the
world, and through the connections they make with everyone
that they meet. They create their worlds through the
thoughts that they think, especially those that they
believe at a deep level, as well as through the choices
they make, and the ways in
which they put those choices into action. As one ancient
text says,
We are
what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
~Dhammapada All forms of art
and creative expression can be understood as
forms of symbolic healing. The artistic healing process is
first of benefit primarily for the artist herself, and
then, gradually, it becomes a healing process for the
community that the artist serves. The artistic
process may be seen as one in which the artist first identifies what
he or she is attempting to heal in themselves (usually on
an emotional/spiritual level). The next step is to
identify how this healing vision of the artist is relevant
and healing for the community that the artist serves.
Following this path, giving voice to individual
self-transformation through artistic expression begins to
impact the wider human community. |
